A bit of a surprise this week on American Idol as the hottie from Howard Beach, Pia Toscano, was eliminated. After a solid, but unspectacular rendition of “River Deep Mountain High”, America just didn’t give Toscano enough support for her first upbeat song of the season. Her stage presence was lacking somewhat. After dazzling viewers with one ballad after another though, the judges were furious at this result. Randy Jackson flat-out said he was upset with the result, which he rarely is. Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez effectively said that America got it wrong.

Pia was in a bottom three that included Jacob Lusk and Stefano Langone. Jacob’s inclusion was a bit of a surprise, but perhaps a bit of a backlash to his arrogant comments prior to singing Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” last night. Jacob was the first to be safe in the bottom three, leaving just Stefano and Pia. Most viewers likely thought that Stefano was in trouble after his somewhat boring performance of “When a Man Loves a Woman”. He had been in the bottom group before as well. But at the end of the day, the crowd was booing loudly. Just eight contestants now remain, and only two of them are female — Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart. All five contestants eliminated so far have been female. Casey Abrams was pegged for elimination, but saved by the judges.

Here’s how it all ended:
