Dress shopping, hair appointments, the who’s who of the town…no it isn’t Hollywood’s award season, it’s that time of year all (okay, the socially normal) high school kids wait for; prom! But for years Hollywood has been telling prom tales on the big screen via teen movies. They represent the best of times, when the girl takes not only the coveted “Prom Queen” title, but the heart of the most sought after boy. They also tell the bad; somber stories of the heartbreak and ache. Nevertheless, prom is an essential to any teen’s life and movie and with Disney’s Prom hitting theaters this weekend, it made me think back to my own (a drunken best friend crying over missing a show) and wondering what a list of the best prom movies would look like…

10. Not Another Teen Movie (2001)
Not Another Teen Movie is a spoof on almost every movie that will follow, but that doesn’t mean its over the top parodies doesn’t cut it. Before Chris Evans was saving the world as Captain America and part of the Fantastic 4 and Chyler Leigh was saving lives on Grey’s Anatomy, they were making light of prom with Good Charlotte as their soundtrack, lucky…

9. Saved (2004)
Saved isn’t too focused on prom, it’s more about teen pregnancy at an uber Christian school, but believe me when I say prom is the ultimate highlight of the entire movie. Everything from Mandy Moore’s “perfection” getting busted to Jena Malone’s “nobody fits in” speech, wrap up teenage years best amongst a sea of odd JC Penny gowns.

8. Carrie (1976)
If the outcast message wasn’t wrapped up in the last one, maybe you’ll see it here. Carrie definitely falls on the “Bad Prom Experience” list for obvious reasons.

7. Prom (2011)
Prom is the reason this came to mind and judging by the title is all about the big night. If it’s not…Dear Disney, what were you thinking?

6. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
10 Things I Hate About You shows that even those deep, dark, mysterious guys’ hearts will grow when prom rolls around. Brokeback Mountain what? Who needs that movie when you have Heath Ledger singing, dancing and paint balling to win the heart of the precious Julia Stiles?

5. Never Been Kissed (1999)
Never Been Kissed is not just the title of my life, but a movie that shows you’re never too old to make amends with your past and attend a prom where a couple can come as the Tortoise and the Hare.

4. Valley Girl (1983)
Once you get past Nicolas Cage’s face, this rad 80’s flick will steal your heart and make you swoon, as if!

3. American Pie (1999)
American Pie is ideally what every prom night will end with; a hotel room and bragging rights on Monday morning in homeroom.

2. She’s All That (1999)
She’s All That starts with a bet, ends with a kiss and proves the nerdy girl will always get the guy (in movies that is). As for the prom? If Usher on the turntables leading an entire dance floor in a synchronized dance doesn’t sound amazing, well then I don’t know what does.

1.Pretty in Pink (1986)
Not Another Teen Movie, as well as the others (maybe not Carrie) would not exist without this Brat Pack classic. A girl from the wrong side of the tracks’ back and forth struggle with her own wills and reality with a “too good for her” rich guy is synonymous with teen movie plots. Molly Ringwald gives all girls hope that their prince will wait for them on prom night even if they are wearing the most atrocious dress ever.
