The group number was so freaking inspiring.  Go watch it.  The producers realized that with only six groups left, there is not nearly enough fluff so they’re letting each group sing two songs:  a rock song and, what’s this, a country song?  Should be interesting, but let’s start with the rock performances…

Pentatonix (“The Kids Who Sang At Starbucks”)

  • Song:  “Born To Be Wild” by Steppenwolf
  • My Thoughts:  Very impressive motorcycle sounds by the black guy.
  • Judges’ Thoughts:  Pssssh!  -Sara Barielles, Shawn and Ben actually said words, positive words.

Dartmouth Aires (“Those College Guys Who Don’t Wear Yellow)

  • Song:  “We’re Not Gonna Take It” by Twisted Sister
  • My Thoughts:  I liked it, but it didn’t sound like a rock song, it sounded like an accappella song.
  • Judges’ Thoughts:  Shawn wanted more cowbell.  Helpful Shawn, helpful.

Afro Blue (“That Black Group With The One White Girl That No One Talks About”)

  • Song:  “American Girl” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
  • My Thoughts:  I could not be more upset right now.  Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is my favorite group of all time and they ruined it.  It’s taking everything I have to keep watching this show.  The arrangement was totally off and for some reason they threw the national anthem in the middle of it.  Do they know Tom Petty at all?  I am really ready for them to go home this week.  This was not okay.
  • Judges’ Thoughts:  Ben didn’t like the national anthem being thrown in because it had nothing to do with the song.  Sara didn’t really see “them” in this performance.  Shawn felt like they were intimidated.

Delilah (“The Girl Group”)

  • Song:  “Dream On” by Aerosmith
  • My Thoughts:  The lead really nailed it even with a rock growl.  I love this song and the arrangement was perfect and it was awesome to see a bunch of girls nail it!  HIGH NOTES!  WOW!
  • Judges’ Thoughts: When Shawn said, “It didn’t miss a thing”, I don’t think he realized that was a joke.  Ben felt that the lead really handled the fan.  Sara didn’t like the performance.  She sucks.

Urban Method (“The Rappers”)

  • Song:  “Here I Go Again On My Own” by White Snake
  • My Thoughts:  I’m not sure why they started so slow, but I did like that they made the song their own and turned it into a rap song.  It’s almost unrecognizable, but it worked for me.
  • Judges’ Thoughts:  The judges’ loved that they took the risk and felt like the girls were stronger than usual.

Vocal Point (“The Mormons”)

  • Song:  “You Really Got Me” by The Kinks
  • My Thoughts:  They sounded like a completely different group tonight and left their homeless Utah schitck at the door and really rocked it out!
  • Judges’ Thoughts:  Shawn liked that they still put their stamp on it, but Ben didn’t really love the “hair band” choice that the group made.

When we come back from the seventeenth commercial break, it’s country time!!!

Dartmouth Aires (“Those College Guys Who Don’t Wear Yellow”)

  • Song:  “Save A Horse” by Big ‘N Rich
  • My Thoughts:  Great song choice for them, but something sounded off.  I don’t know what it was, but Ben probably does.
  • Judges’ Thoughts:  Nope, Ben just made gun noises.  When Sara started to talk, the boys took their hats off.  Adorable!

Afro Blue (“That Black Group With The One White Girl That No One Talks About”)

  • Song:  “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum
  • My Thoughts:  I would argue that this is not a country song.  But I’m still mad at them so I’m a bit testy.
  • Judges’ Thoughts:  They loved it.  Whatever.

Urban Method (“The Rappers”)

  • Song:  “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood
  • My Thoughts:  I was wary when they opened with this weird group high note thing, but the performance quickly won me over.  They took a risk putting the girls up front again, but I think the girls really proved themselves this time.
  • Judges’ Thoughts:  The judges agree that the girls really came through this time.

Delilah (“The Girl Group”)

  • Song:  “If I Die Young” by Band Perry
  • My Thoughts:  I’ve actually never heard this song before, but it was a beautiful performance.
  • Judges’ Thoughts:  Sara cried.  Shawn liked the emotion, but it really wasn’t there technically.  Ben referred to Shawn as his “judge homie”.

Vocal Point (“The Mormons”)

  • Song:  “Life Is A Highway” by Rascal Flats
  • My Thoughts:  These guys are so adorable.  Despite being a fast song that’s hard to sing along with the radio, the lead nails it and even manages to join his Mormon brothers in a line dance.
  • Judges’ Thoughts:  Shawn liked the car starting noise at the beginning.  Though it felt a little rushed, the performance over all was good.

Pentatonix (“The Kids Who Sang At Starbucks”)

  • Song:  “Stuck Like Glue” by Sugarland
  • My Thoughts:  Um, is this a country song?  It sounds reggae.
  • Judges’ Thoughts:  Shawn loved the arrangement and Sara noted it was a sweet performance and dropped that she’s friends with Sugarland.

It’s elimination time and if Afro Blue doesn’t go home, I may not come back to this show.  Nick Lachey savors every minute of screen time.  Oh my God, they actually eliminated Delilah.  Now I have to talk to our editor and see if I can quit this show.  The girls exit the stage to “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child.
