Interview: Eva Longoria on ‘The Alma Awards’
The following interview previously appeared on the Pop Culture Passionistas blog.
It’s amazing that Eva Longoria has found the time to return as Executive Producer and co-host of the 2012 NCLR ALMA Awards again this year. But the super-busy actress-entrepreneur-activist- philanthropist wouldn’t miss the chance to honor the Latino community that is so near and dear to her heart.
In fact, she’s been working with National Council of La Raza, the organization that created the ceremony since she was an up-and-comer on The Young and the Restless. Now she’s one of the hottest stars on TV.
And to top it off she’s been using her celeb status as co-chair of President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign. Which even lead her to deliver a speech at the Democratic National Convention last week.
But in a recent conference call interview, she made it clear that nothing would keep her away from the ALMAs. “It’s been crazy because I’ve been campaigning a lot for the President. And it’s been great. It’s usually harder. Whenever I was on Desperate Housewives, that was a little harder. But you make it work. It’s a very important show.”
Besides she has such great chemistry with her ongoing co-host, George Lopez. Eva talked about what they have planned for the coming show. “Every year George and I mix it up because usually George’s comedy is pretty relevant to current events. And so this is a really big year obviously with the elections coming up and a lot of fun things have happened this year. And so we’re usually current-event-related. So every year is a little different and exciting and fun.”
She added, “One year we did a skit with Cheech and Chong and next year we’ll do something else. And so this year we’re actually formulating all of our stuff right now.”
Eva also gave a sneak peek at some of the people who were being featured on this year’s ceremony. She noted, “We’re honoring all the Olympian medalists, which is really great. Also with Christina [Aguilera], she’s classic. And so we always do these obviously [give] some recognition to people who have just contributed for a long amount of time to the Latino community. But she’s so relevant now because her show is really big and everything that she’s been doing philanthropically. And so we thought it’s time we honor her. And we’re just excited about it. It’s exciting because every year the show is a blank slate. We have to start anew every time.”
The show is sure to deliver the requisite amount of powerful moments. But Eva took a moment to reflect on highlights from ceremonies gone by. She recalled, “One of mine [was] Andy Garcia. I don’t know why that one just sticks with me when we honored Andy Garcia. And another one was when we honored Marc Anthony. Those were really great tributes that I remember were just great and the musical of all of those were amazing.”
She continued, “And then another one is when Christina Aguilera first came on the scene and her first televised appearance was on the ALMA and it was ‘Jeanie in a Bottle.’ And so just looking back and going, ‘Wow, she was on our stage when she was beginning her career.’”
