Whether you loved him on Quantum LeapMen of a Certain AgeDesperate Housewives of his recent appearance on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, there’s probably a lot about Scott Bakula that you never learned about him. In a recent conference call interview, he shared some of those unexplored tidbits. Here are five things you don’t know about Scott Bakula.

He Likes Classic Holiday Movies
In anticipation of the holiday season, Scott was asked which Xmas flick was his nearest and dearest to his heart. He replied, “I love White Christmas. That’s one of my favorites just because I love the music. I love the story, Bing Crosby. It’s just one of my all time favorites. And it’s hard to have a Christmas without seeing a little bit of Jimmy Stewart and angels running around town.”

If He Hadn’t Become an Actor, He Would Have Held Court
If Scott hadn’t been an actor he probably would have followed family father into the legal profession. As he explained, “I’ve always had an affinity for lawyers. My dad is a lawyer. He’s retired now. My brother is a lawyer. It’s always been easy, the legalese. And I’ve always felt comfortable certainly in a courtroom because you’re just performing. And there was a time in my life when I thought when I grew up I’d be a trial lawyer myself. So I’m not afraid of those kinds of parts at all. So I do have a certain affinity for it.”

He Was Newby When It Came to Shooting in NYC
Despite the fact that he has almost 60 credits to his name, Bakula’s recent turn on Law & Order marked his first shoot in the Big Apple. He confessed, “I’ve shot a lot of places and I’ve produced. I always thought, gosh, when you shoot in a big city it’s so difficult. And New York, I always think where are you going to park the trucks? How are you going to stop the traffic? How are you going to walk around the streets and how does Mariska [Hargitay] get from her trailer to the set without people stopping her and asking her [to] solve a crime. And I was very impressed, obviously they’ve been doing it for a while and people shoot in New York all the time. I’d just had never done it.

He added, “So and we were shooting in Brooklyn. And we shot in lots of different places. But they had a good system down. And it was very smooth and easy. I have to say I was kind of pleasantly surprised by it. I’m sure there’s a lot of planning and pre-work that goes into making it all happen. But the people on the street were very pleasant. And New Yorkers, it’s hard to shock them or get them excited about anything. And they were just kind of, ‘Hey, Scott. How’s it going?’

“And you just walk down the street and you go and shoot your scene. And people watch and they’re relatively well trained in terms of how to be hanging out around the set. So it was a blast actually. We had some great weather. And I’d love to do it again.”

He Enjoys a Good Reality Competition Show
While he confessed this his viewing leading up to the presidential election was very news-centric and he’s looking forward to the return of Smash, Scott wasn’t shy about his love for reality TV. He acknowledged, “My TV watch list, we’re kind of behind on things around here. We’re deep into The VoiceProject Runway. We finished So You Think You Can Dance.”

He Longs to Be Bad Again
Even though Scott’s characters have had their flaws, they tended to be pretty nice guys for the most part. But he noted that he’d like to take on parts that have a darker side. “I’d really like to play bad guys or guys that have something a little bit off about them. And I get to do that periodically. But ironically when I first came out to L.A. a long time ago that was almost exclusively the kind of parts that I got… Nice guys but something a little jerky, a little bit you like him in spite of the fact that they can be not the nicest guys in the world. Those are fun parts to play.

He added, “I’d love to play a really good bad guy. I’ve done that a couple of times where I’ve played a murderer or somebody like that. So, I’m always looking for something different. That’s the biggest thing.”
