Les Miserables and Django Unchained have taken the top 2nd and 3rd spots as the highest ranking Christmas releases EVER! So yeah, the ol’ Box Office had a delightfully successful Christmas.

According to CinemaBlend, Les Miserables won the day with an $18 million haul for its opening day. Pretty impressive, huh? Django Unchained, Quentin Taratino‘s latest offering wasn’t far behind, a still-impressive $15.5 million (although neither of them could beat Sherlock Holmes, which grossed $24.6 million on its Christmas release in 2009).

And how many of you have seen The Hobbit? As you can imagine (if indeed, you weren’t there), theaters were pretty full this Christmas, and in fact, Fandango is celebrating record-breaking sales, having broken their company record of 12 years for the most tickets sold in one day. That even tops May 4th’s The Avengers, when it took in a staggering $80.8 million on opening day. Wow.

As for the chart for films which openedbefore Christmas but earned high box office grosses on Christmas day, Les Mis and Django are 4th and 5th. In first place (again), Sherlock Holmes, followed by Avatar (2), and Meet the Fockers (3).
