Box Office: ‘The Fate of the Furious’ Smashes Record with Huge Global Opening
Get revved up! The Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment in the franchise, had the largest worldwide debut to date, raking in $532.5 million.
F8 bested former global champ, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened $529 million worldwide in 2015. Domestically, F8 earned a healthy $100.2 million but it took a dip from its previous installment. Furious 7 made $147 million in 2015.
As for the other movies in the top five, the animated Boss Baby came in second with $15.5 million, while Beauty and the Beast held on strong in third with $13.6 million and pushing its worldwide total past the $1 billion mark.
In fourth place, Smurfs: The Lost Village earned $6.5 million, and Going In Style rounded out the top five with $6.3 million.
