We’ve got two new shows this fall centered on future space exploration: FOX’s The Orville, a hour-length comedy from Seth MacFarlane that is Star Trek-esque, and CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery, which is centered squarely in the Star Trek universe and takes place roughly a decade before the original Star Trek series.

The plot is mostly unknown at this point, Star Trek: Discovery stars Jason Isaacs, The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Yeoh and more… watch the trailer!

The Orville focuses on a down-on-his-luck Planetary Union officer Ed Mercer (MacFarlane) finally gets his chance to command his own ship. Determined to prove his worth and start a new chapter, Ed discovers the first wrinkle in his plan when the First Officer assigned to his ship is his ex-wife, Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki). As the new commander, Ed assembles a qualified — but eccentric — crew, including his best friend, Gordon (Scott Grimes), who has problems with authority but is the best helmsman in the fleet; Dr. Claire Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald ); Bortus (Peter Macon), an alien from a single-sex species; Isaac (Mark Jackson), an artificial life-form from a machine society; and Alara Kitan (Halston Sage), a young, inexperienced security officer..
