The coronavirus pandemic is really doing a number on the summer movie season – but I guess that just means we’ll have more to look forward to at the end of year (and in 2021).
The coronavirus pandemic is really doing a number on the summer movie season – but I guess that just means we’ll have more to look forward to at the end of year (and in 2021).
Here are the latest shifts in movie release dates while major theaters across the country remain closed for another two months:
· Paramount has decided to push Top Gun Maverick from June 24 to December 23 (which pushes off Chris Pratt’s The Tomorrow War to 2021).
· The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will now debut July 31, instead of on Memorial Day weekend, May 22. Sony/Marvel’s Morbius exited that prime spot for March 19, 2021.
· A Quiet Place Part II, which was originally being released March 20, will now open on September 4, Labor Day weekend.
· Disney has decided to open Mulan on July 24, which pushessummer hopeful Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, to next summer, July 30, 2021.
· In a big Marvel movie upheaval, Black Widow will now open November 6, which pushes Eternals to February 12, 2021. That, in turn, sets Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ringsto May 7, 2021, displacing Doctor Strange 2, now set for November 5, 2021.Thor: Love and Thunder relocates to February 18, 2022, while Black Panther 2's May 6, 2022, date is unchanged.Captain Marvel 2, however, is moving up two weeks to July 8, 2022.
· DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour is expected to be largely available for on-demand rental April 10. STX has yet to re-date family comedy My Spy, starring Dave Bautista.
